Last night we watched Taking Lives, a psychological thriller about a serial murderer. I could probably stop right there: but what was most remarkable was the total absence of any positive values in the entire movie. Of course, there are the requisite grisly corpses, violence, and chase scenes that go with this genre. But there is no sign of compassion for any of the victims, only a grim acknowledgement. No real comraderie among the police investigating. The main investigator (played by Angelina Jolie) is a loner with a near-obsessive attention to detail, but shows no real humanity: i think i saw two smiles during the entire movie. The obligatory gratuitious sex scene has no compassion. Even when the villain finally gets his, there is no sense of justice, only vengeance and finality.
